AEO means answer engine optimization. Check search access, accurate service information, and measured answers before paying for a defined repair scope.

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: work intended to improve how a business or its content is found and represented in AI-assisted answers. It can include website access checks, clearer service information and measuring what search tools actually return.

For a local business, I'd start with a practical question: can a prospective customer find accurate information about your service, coverage and next step? That work is useful even when an AI answer never mentions you. Buying an “AEO package” makes sense only when its written tasks address a gap you can identify.

How does AEO relate to SEO?

SEO concerns visibility in search engines. AEO focuses attention on answer-based search experiences, including Google AI features and ChatGPT search. Much of the site work overlaps: public access, accurate business details, clear pages and useful evidence. Different products still have different controls and reporting.

Google's AI optimization guide treats generative AI search as part of SEO. Its AI-features guidance names indexing and snippet eligibility as the prerequisites for supporting links.

OpenAI's crawler documentation assigns OAI-SearchBot to search and GPTBot to potential model-training use. Those settings are independent. ChatGPT-User handles certain user-requested visits and doesn't determine search eligibility. Allowing a training crawler is therefore a different decision from permitting search access.

What useful work can an AEO service do?

A worthwhile scope should name the defect, the repair and how you'll check it. For example, if your service page hides coverage in an image, putting it in readable text helps customers inspect it. If a public listing gives an old phone number, correcting it resolves an actual identity error.

Review these parts of your public information:

  • Service fit: what you do, what you don't accept and who the service is for.
  • Coverage and availability: where you travel, whether customers visit you, and how an appointment is confirmed.
  • Evidence: genuine completed work, accurate qualifications and source-attributed claims.
  • Contact and cost: a working inquiry path, quote conditions and any required recurring charges.

A hypothetical plumbing page saying “we repair domestic water leaks in these postcodes; call to confirm today's availability” answers a customer question more clearly than “all your plumbing needs.” Use the real operation's details. Don't publish a service, credential or response promise the business can't honor.

Structured data can describe the business and article, but it must agree with the visible page. Google says there's no special schema or new AI text file required for its AI features. Write clearly for the reader; that serves the engines too.

How do you check whether the work helped?

Keep a baseline of actual answers before changing the site. Save the exact prompt, date, product, whether web search was used and the place named in the question. Include brand questions and the non-brand service questions customers might ask. A brand-name answer shows the engine knows your name. A service question shows whether a stranger would find you.

Open the answer's supporting links. Record a business mention, a citation to your site and a link to a third-party directory separately. Check whether the source supports the claim. One good screenshot is one good day.

Compare like-for-like checks after a documented change, retaining misses as well as appearances. Then look separately at referral visits, inquiries, bookings and completed work. Record other changes, including ad spend, season and staffing. Use the before-and-after to pick your next step.

Our published results show the kind of number worth asking for. Total Solar Cleaning's website brought in 115 form inquiries between January 24 and October 16, 2026. That's just the form. Phone calls aren't in that count. We started with Total Solar under the Reboot name, before we became Xomer. Ask any provider for numbers you can check like that.

How long does AEO take to work?

You can agree on a delivery date for an access repair or a rewritten page. An engine's discovery, indexing and subsequent answers run on a separate schedule. Ask a provider to distinguish completed work from an observed search appearance. Keep the implementation date and repeat the recorded checks.

What does AEO cost?

The label alone doesn't define a price. An access repair, a new website, monthly reporting and a paid-media program are different purchases. Ask for setup and recurring charges, included implementation time and what requires a separate quote. Treat competing proposals as actual scopes, not a market average assembled from unrelated offers.

You can start without buying a package: test the inquiry path, correct public details, rewrite a confusing service description and record search observations. A developer may be needed for access or indexing defects. Ongoing monitoring needs someone to interpret the results and decide whether further work is justified.

Xomer sells managed websites with a set amount of visibility work each month. The offer below states the build price, required monthly service and shared implementation allowance. Existing sites are assessed separately; an audit can show that your current site is adequate or needs a specific repair instead of a rebuild.

What should you ask before paying a provider?

  1. What will you change? Request named pages or defects, the deliverables and exclusions. “Get you into AI” is too vague to evaluate.
  2. What will you measure? Request the prompts, source links, dates and unfavorable observations alongside the favorable ones. Keep business results separate from search appearances.
  3. What do I own? Confirm site files, domain access, content, accounts and the migration work needed if you leave. Keep domain registration and Business Profile ownership in accounts your business controls, granting a provider access you can revoke.
  4. What happens after month one? Establish the recurring charge, implementation limits, cancellation and any work still outstanding.
