What You Can Check in ChatGPT's Local Business Answers (2026)
ChatGPT business answers expose some citations, not a complete selection formula. Record observable facts, search mode and unknowns before making changes.

TL;DR: You can run this audit yourself, today. Ask the assistant the question your customers ask, save the answer with its date, product mode and cited sources, then repeat it monthly. The citation list is the part you can actually check.
You can read ChatGPT's local-business answer and the sources it cites. Start there before you pay anyone for a recommendation fix.
Who can audit whether ChatGPT mentions your business
Open the assistant your customers use. Ask a real service question in their wording, such as “Who repairs this type of roof in my service area?” Save the answer, product, mode, date and every linked source. If you run a separate search-enabled test, keep that record separately. The time required depends on the sources and their accessibility.
An audit earns its keep by repetition. A single run tells you what an assistant said on the day you ran it. The same run monthly tells you what moved.
Xomer sells this work, so read this page as a provider's account. If you would rather buy the audit than run it yourself, agencies and freelancers sell one as an AI-visibility audit. Our rule of thumb for judging one:
- It hands you the raw answers and citation lists, not a score.
- Every result carries its date, engine and product mode.
- It separates what was observed from what is inferred.
Xomer builds websites and sells managed visibility services. An adequate existing site may need a limited correction, not a replacement. Existing-site assessment and implementation require their own written scope.
ChatGPT local business recommendations, and what varies
When someone asks an assistant for a local provider, the reply is specific to that person, that wording and that moment. The same test run by different owners can return different names. Engine, location, phrasing and date can all move it.
Product mode can move the answer too. Some modes show current web sources alongside the answer. Others answer without visible retrieval. Record which mode you used. Only part of what goes into an answer is visible to you.
Which measures work, and how you would know
You can show that an answer changed between dated tests. That much is checkable. Answers can also drift on their own, so keep the test wording fixed, re-run on a schedule, and avoid changing several things between runs.
The areas below are things you can inspect and fix on your own site.
- Entity clarity. State your actual name, contact details, service area and trade visibly; publish a physical address only when appropriate, and mark up your business identity with LocalBusiness structured data.
- Specific sentences. Write facts a machine can lift whole, as a solar cleaner would: "We clean solar panels for homes and businesses across the Bay Area."
- Listing consistency. Keep appropriate public contact and location facts consistent across your site, Google Business Profile and relevant directories. Do not publish a private home address merely to make records match.
- Real questions, answered. Write out what customers actually ask you, with complete answers on the page.
- Third-party sources. Relevant coverage, trade directories and genuine reviews can supply independent evidence. Read the actual passage to make sure it says what you think.
"A website built to be understood gives AI systems better evidence."
Put each possible input in the right evidence column
An input-status sheet keeps access facts separate from answer observations. Use one row for each fact or source you want to examine:
| Field | What belongs there |
|---|---|
| Test conditions | Exact question, product/mode, date, supplied location and any unavailable condition marked unknown. |
| Observable answer | Actual business names, wording and citations; note a linked source separately from a recommendation. |
| Visible source | URL, complete relevant passage, source date and whether it supports the stated fact. |
| Public business fact | Current owner-supported service, coverage or contact detail; who controls its published record. |
| Access evidence | Actual source availability or crawler setting checked by the website owner. |
| Unknown and action | Unexposed retrieval/selection details, the specific supported correction and a dated recheck. |
A fictional row might record: “Search-enabled answer links a trade directory; directory passage lists our former number; owner confirms current number; directory update requested; complete selection process unknown; next answer pending.” The linked passage supports a contact correction.
OpenAI's crawler documentation supplies a narrower public fact: OAI-SearchBot concerns search, while GPTBot concerns potential model training, and the controls are independent. ChatGPT-User has separately documented user-initiated behavior; a robot access setting isn't a complete answer-input log.
Google's AI guidance applies to Google's features, not ChatGPT. It retains ordinary SEO prerequisites without special AI schema.
Which directories and sources shape the answers
OpenAI's ChatGPT search guide describes a Sources view, when available, containing cited sources and other relevant links. Save those links alongside citations in the answer and record their roles separately. Read the linked passages and note whether they include your business and current facts. On our read, check your own service pages, your Google Business Profile, the directories for your trade, review sites and local press first.
An HVAC company in Lafayette, Louisiana, should take its test questions from real customer calls, in the words callers used, and only for jobs it actually accepts. The answers to those questions are the ones worth checking first.
For local service businesses in Austin's home service market, run the baseline before assuming anything about local AI use. Record which businesses and sources come back for plumbing and HVAC questions. In Atlanta's local home service and contractor market, start with a question such as "best HVAC company in Atlanta". Record its citation list alongside the names it gives you.
Citations and recommendations are different outcomes
Being cited means the assistant linked your page as a source. A recommendation presents your business as an option to consider; a mention can simply identify it. Either can happen without the other, and your saved answers show which you are getting.
Complete service facts help a reader evaluate fit. Compare the actual cited passage with those facts before attributing an answer to a directory, schema field or review count.
