TL;DR: Test the same service-and-town questions in ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Google AI. Save each answer, mode, date, location, businesses, and sources. Begin where customers report finding you or where you find a factual error.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI features can give different local answers to the same question. Run a matched test before deciding where to spend time. Keep the question and location fixed, then inspect each result.

What changes between ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI?

ChatGPT Search may search the web automatically or when a person selects Search; record the city in your question and any area the answer names. Perplexity offers standard and Pro Search, so record the mode before comparing its linked sources with another answer. Google AI Overviews appear on some regular Search results, while AI Mode handles questions that need more exploration; the two can show different links. For a local business, the useful comparison is what each answer says about your services, coverage and contact details, then whether a customer actually used it to find you. Your callers will tell you which one sends customers.

ChatGPT: did search run, and what did it cite?

OpenAI's ChatGPT search help says a response using web search may include citations and that those links can be incomplete or wrong. Record whether search ran, open the sources, and compare the quoted business details with the source itself.

If ChatGPT names a business with an old phone number, correct the cited listing or owned page where that number appears. If it names no one, try a specific service-and-town question before concluding that the business is invisible to the product.

Perplexity: which pages supported this answer?

Perplexity's Pro Search help describes source links with its answers. Open each link and check whether it actually says what the answer attributes to it. A cited directory page can show you stale facts to fix.

Keep the product mode in the record. A Pro Search answer and a standard answer may use different research paths, and a later product update may change them again. If you correct a source, save the old citation and repeat the same question after the corrected page is public.

"Every engine answers for itself. Test each one before you decide where to spend your time."

Google AI: can the relevant page be indexed?

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode may show supporting links in Search, but an AI answer does not appear for every question. Google's site-owner guidance says a supporting link must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Check the intended page in Search Console before attributing a missing link to the copy. Then record the answer and any links it actually shows.

A current Google Business Profile gives customers useful local facts in Search and Maps. Neither its performance report nor Search Console counts your AI mentions, so keep your own answer log.

Claude: add it as a fourth surface if customers use it

Anthropic's web-search help describes cited responses when web search is enabled. Record whether it was enabled. Test Claude when a customer mentions it or when a broader answer audit is worth the extra work.

How should a local business run one matched test?

Choose five questions that fit your actual services: one branded, three service-and-location questions, and one comparison or urgent-job question if it reflects how customers buy. Use the same wording and location on each surface. Save the date, account or mode, answer text, named businesses, citations, and accuracy of your service area and phone. Mark “no AI answer shown” separately from “AI answer shown but business absent.”

For each correction, log the URL or profile, the exact fact changed, and the public update date. Ask the original question again later, word for word. If the new answer cites the corrected source, the fix took. A customer call is what makes it pay.

I would start with a wrong fact the customer can see, even if the business appears in every assistant. A correct service area and phone help a person contact you today. Chasing a mention while a cited phone number is wrong reverses that order.

How this plays out in a real market

For a Spokane home service company that fixes furnaces and frozen pipes, the test questions should be the winter ones its callers ask, like who can repair a furnace today. Save the answers and their sources on several dates. That record tells you more than any guess about which assistant your customers use.

A Reno remodeling contractor can pull test questions straight from intake notes, in the words callers used. A Buffalo heating and roofing business might keep a separate winter set for furnace and storm-damage work, so the winter answers don't get mixed in with the rest.

What to do this week

Begin with the surface a caller actually mentioned, or with the answer carrying a wrong fact you can fix. A small business with no customer-source record should run the matched test across the three main surfaces first and ask new callers how they found the company. The answer log helps choose a correction; qualified inquiries and booked work tell you whether the correction matters to the business.
